The Art of Photography
Welcome to the photography of Neil G Smith, a Scottish artist and photographer based in East Kilbride.
Photography for me is more than simply taking a picture. It is about seeing the world differently, finding stories in familiar places and turning a moment into an image that makes you stop and look. From the landscapes and coastline of Scotland to the architecture, streets and people of Glasgow, I am interested in the character and atmosphere of the places around me.
My photography explores landscape, architecture, urban environments, nature, birds and documentary subjects, as well as the everyday details that can easily be overlooked. I am particularly interested in the idea of Localism in Photography — looking closer to home rather than always chasing the famous or Instagram-perfect location. East Kilbride, Glasgow and the surrounding areas provide an incredible source of photographic inspiration, proving that you don't have to travel thousands of miles to create interesting and meaningful photographs.
Photography also connects directly with my work as an artist. A photograph can become the starting point for an illustration, painting or completely new creative idea. This connection between lens and line, photography and art, is an important part of my creative journey.
Whether I am exploring a Scottish landscape, photographing the changing face of a city or simply discovering something interesting around the corner, my aim is always the same:

Commission & Project Work
Every project is different, and sometimes the best photographs are created when there is a story, idea or purpose behind them.
I offer commissioned photography and creative project work for individuals, businesses, organisations and events. This can range from capturing a particular place, building or landscape to creating a collection of photographs around a specific theme or idea. With my background in both photography and visual art, I can approach a commission creatively, working with you to understand what you want to achieve and develop a visual style that suits the project.
Perhaps you need photographs of a special location, want to document a building or event, require images for a creative project, or have an idea that doesn't fit into a conventional photography package. I'm happy to discuss the possibilities.
Projects can be small and personal or larger and more involved, with the final images supplied digitally or developed into prints, artwork or other creative formats where appropriate.
I particularly enjoy projects that tell a story — combining photography, location and creativity to produce something that is unique to you.
