Understanding Manual Camera Settings


Photography gives us an incredible amount of creative control, but sometimes the automatic settings on a camera can get in the way of what we are trying to achieve.

Learning to use manual camera settings gives you the opportunity to decide how light, movement, focus and colour are captured, rather than simply allowing the camera to make all the decisions for you.


You don't need to master everything at once. Understanding a few fundamental controls can completely change the way you approach photography.




The Exposure Triangle


At the heart of manual photography is the exposure triangle — aperture, shutter speed and ISO.


These three settings work together to control the exposure of your photograph, but each also has a creative effect on the final image.


Aperture: Controlling Depth of Field


Aperture controls how much light enters through the lens and also affects how much of your photograph appears in focus.


A wide aperture, represented by a low f-number such as f/1.8, allows more light into the camera and can create a beautifully blurred background. This is particularly useful for portraits where you want the subject to stand out.


A narrow aperture, such as f/16, allows less light in but provides greater depth of field, making more of the scene appear sharp. This can be particularly useful for landscapes.

So aperture isn't simply about exposure — it can be a powerful creative decision.


Shutter Speed: Capturing Movement


Shutter speed controls how long the camera's sensor is exposed to light.


A fast shutter speed, such as 1/1000 second, can freeze movement. This makes it useful for sports, wildlife and other fast-moving subjects.


A slower shutter speed, such as 1/30 second or longer, allows movement to become visible as blur. This can be used creatively for light trails, moving water or light painting.

Instead of always trying to eliminate movement, photography gives us the option to use movement as part of the image.


ISO: Working with Light


ISO controls the camera sensor's sensitivity to light.


A low ISO, such as 100–200, generally produces a cleaner image with less digital noise. A higher ISO can make an image brighter in low-light conditions, although it can introduce more visible noise.


The general approach is to keep ISO as low as practical while increasing it when the available light requires it.


Understanding ISO becomes particularly important when working in changing light or trying to balance aperture and shutter speed for a particular creative effect.


Focus: Decide What Matters


Focus is another area where you can take control.


With manual focus, you control the focus yourself using the lens ring. This can be particularly useful for landscapes, macro photography, low-light situations or any situation where you want precise control.


Autofocus, meanwhile, allows the camera to focus automatically.


Different autofocus modes can be useful for different situations. Single autofocus is suited to stationary subjects, while continuous autofocus is designed to track moving subjects.

Knowing when to use each approach can make it easier to keep your intended subject sharp.


Understanding How Your Camera Reads Light


Your camera needs to measure the light in a scene before deciding how to expose the photograph. This is where metering modes come in.


Evaluative or matrix metering considers the entire scene and is a common general-purpose option.


Centre-weighted metering gives greater importance to the centre of the frame.


Spot metering takes a much smaller reading, allowing you to measure the light from a specific part of the scene.


This can be particularly useful when there is a significant difference between light and dark areas — for example, a backlit portrait, a concert or a wildlife subject against a contrasting background.


The basic principle is simple:

Use spot metering when one particular part of the image matters most.


If you want the camera to consider the overall balance of the scene, a wider metering mode may be more appropriate.


White Balance: More Than Just Correct Colour


White balance controls the colour temperature of your photographs.


Your camera can use settings such as Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten and Fluorescent to compensate for different types of light.


But white balance doesn't always have to be about technical accuracy.

It can also be used creatively.


Warming an image can create a welcoming or atmospheric feeling, while cooler tones can produce a very different mood.


Sometimes the "correct" colour isn't necessarily the most interesting colour.


Choosing Your Shooting Mode


You don't necessarily have to jump straight from fully automatic photography into complete manual control.


  • Manual Mode (M) allows you to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO yourself.

  • Aperture Priority (A or Av) allows you to choose the aperture while the camera determines the shutter speed.

  • Shutter Priority (S or Tv) allows you to choose the shutter speed while the camera determines the aperture.


These different modes provide different levels of control and can be useful depending on the situation.


Exposure Compensation


Even when using a semi-automatic shooting mode, you can still tell the camera that you want an image to be brighter or darker.


Exposure compensation allows you to adjust the exposure:

+ = brighter

– = darker

This can be particularly useful when the camera's automatic exposure doesn't quite match the creative result you're looking for.


Choosing How You Capture the Moment


Drive modes determine what happens when you press the shutter.


You might take a single photograph, use continuous burst mode to capture a sequence of images, or use a timer with a short delay.


Burst mode can be useful when photographing movement, while a timer can be useful for self-portraits, group photographs or situations where you want to reduce camera movement.


Reading the Histogram


The histogram can look complicated at first, but it is essentially a graph showing the distribution of brightness within your photograph.


  • The left side represents shadows and blacks.

  • The middle represents midtones.

  • The right side represents highlights and whites.


Learning to read the histogram can help you identify whether areas of an image are becoming excessively dark or bright and can help you make more informed exposure decisions.


JPEG or RAW?


The format you choose can also affect how much control you have over your photographs after taking them.


JPEG files are compressed, smaller and generally ready to use straight from the camera.

RAW files retain considerably more information for editing, giving photographers greater flexibility during post-production.


For photographers who want maximum editing control, RAW provides greater flexibility.


Manual Control Means Creative Control


Learning manual photography isn't simply about understanding buttons, numbers and camera menus.


It is about understanding why you are making a particular decision.

Want a beautifully blurred background? Think about aperture.

Want to freeze a fast-moving subject? Think about shutter speed.

Want to capture a long exposure? Slow the shutter down.

Working in low light? Consider ISO.

Want to control exactly where the camera measures light? Explore spot metering.


The more you understand these controls, the less you have to rely on the camera making creative decisions for you.


Experiment, Compare and Learn


One of the best ways to understand manual settings is to experiment.


Take three photographs of the same subject:

  1. Use a wide aperture.

  2. Use a fast shutter speed.

  3. Use a high ISO in low light.


Then compare the results.

Look at how the depth of field changes, how movement is captured and how increasing ISO affects the appearance of the image.


The important thing isn't simply getting the "right" setting. It's understanding what each setting does and why you might choose it.


Take Control of Your Photography


The beauty of photography is that there isn't just one way to create an image.

Automatic settings can be useful, but learning manual controls opens up a much wider range of creative possibilities.


The exposure triangle provides the foundation, while focus, metering, white balance and shooting modes give you even more ways to influence the final photograph.


Ultimately, mastering your camera isn't about making photography more complicated.


It's about giving yourself the freedom to create the photograph you want, rather than simply accepting the photograph your camera chooses to give you.
