Photography doesn't always have to be about taking a single photograph and getting everything perfect in one exposure.
Sometimes the lighting is difficult, the depth of field is extremely shallow, or the scene is changing so quickly that you need to give yourself more options.
This is where techniques such as bracketing, focus stacking and time-lapse photography can become incredibly useful.
They allow you to capture a series of carefully controlled images and then use them individually or combine them during editing to create a final result that wouldn't necessarily be possible from a single photograph.
What Is Bracketing?
Bracketing involves taking multiple photographs of the same composition while changing one particular setting between each image.
The idea is simple: rather than relying on a single exposure or focus point, you capture a sequence of possibilities.
You can then choose the strongest photograph afterwards or combine several images using editing software.
Bracketing can be particularly useful when you're faced with challenging lighting or situations where you need an unusually large depth of field.
There are several types of bracketing, but two of the most useful are exposure bracketing and focus bracketing.
Exposure Bracketing
Exposure bracketing involves taking several photographs at different exposure levels.
A typical sequence might include:
One image at the camera's suggested exposure
One image slightly underexposed

Some cameras allow you to set the amount of exposure variation and automatically capture the sequence.

Why Use Exposure Bracketing?
Exposure bracketing can be particularly useful when a scene contains a very wide range of brightness.
Imagine photographing a landscape with a bright sky and a much darker foreground.
If you expose for the sky, the foreground may become almost black.
If you expose for the foreground, the sky may become completely white.
Taking several exposures gives you more information to work with.
You can then choose the best individual exposure or combine the images to create an HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograph.

Use a Tripod
When you're planning to combine bracketed photographs, keeping the camera in exactly the same position is extremely important.

The more accurately the images line up, the easier they will be to combine later.
Some modern editing software can automatically align images, but starting with carefully aligned photographs will always make the process easier.
Creating HDR Images
HDR photography uses multiple exposures to capture a greater range of brightness than a single exposure may be able to record.
A typical HDR sequence might contain:
Underexposed → Normal → Overexposed
The darker exposure preserves detail in bright areas such as skies, while the brighter exposure can reveal information in shadows.
Software can then combine these images into a single photograph.
However, HDR doesn't have to mean creating an exaggerated or heavily processed image. A well-made HDR photograph can look completely natural.
The aim should be to create an image that retains detail across the scene while still looking believable.
Focus Bracketing
Exposure isn't the only thing you can bracket.
Focus bracketing involves taking a series of photographs while gradually changing the focus point.
This is particularly useful when you're working with a very shallow depth of field.
Imagine photographing a small flower or product at close range.
At a wide aperture, you might only have a very small area that appears sharp.
You could take one photograph focused on the front of the subject, another focused slightly further back and continue until you've captured the entire subject.
The individual images can then be combined using a technique known as focus stacking.
Focus Stacking
Focus stacking combines multiple photographs taken at different focus distances into a single image.
The result can have much more depth of field than would normally be possible from one exposure.
For example, when photographing a small object close to the camera, you might capture:
Front → Middle → Back
Each photograph contains a different area in focus.
Editing software can then analyse the images and combine the sharpest areas from each one.
The finished photograph can appear sharp from front to back.
Where Is Focus Bracketing Useful?
Focus bracketing is particularly valuable for:
Macro photography
Product photography
Close-up nature photography
Jewellery
Small objects
Still-life photography
Landscapes requiring extreme front-to-back sharpness
It can also be useful when you want to use a wide aperture for creative reasons but still need more of the subject to appear sharp.
Focus Stacking for Landscapes
Focus stacking isn't limited to macro photography.
It can also be used for landscapes where you have an important foreground object very close to the camera and a distant background.
Normally, you might have to compromise between keeping the foreground and background sharp.
Focus stacking gives you another option.
You could photograph one frame focused on the foreground and another focused towards the background, then combine the sharp areas.
This can produce an image with exceptional depth and detail.
However, it isn't always necessary.
Good lens choice, aperture selection and careful focusing can often produce enough depth of field from a single exposure.
As with all photographic techniques, use focus stacking when it solves a particular problem rather than simply because the technology allows you to do it.

Time-Lapse Photography
While bracketing involves changing settings between photographs, time-lapse photography involves capturing a sequence of photographs over a period of time and playing them back as a video.
Instead of recording every moment continuously, you take individual photographs at regular intervals.
When these images are played back rapidly, movement that normally happens very slowly becomes visible.
Clouds race across the sky.
Sunsets unfold in seconds.
Traffic streams through a city.
A building gradually takes shape.
Plants appear to grow before your eyes.
Time-lapse photography allows us to see time in a completely different way.

Almost anything that changes over time can potentially become a time-lapse.

Setting Up a Time-Lapse
A successful time-lapse begins with consistency.
One of the most important pieces of equipment is a tripod.
Your camera needs to remain in exactly the same position throughout the sequence. Even small movements can make the finished video appear unstable.
Use Manual Exposure
For many time-lapse projects, manual exposure is preferable to allowing the camera to change its settings automatically.
If the camera changes exposure from one photograph to the next, the final video can appear to flicker.
This is particularly noticeable in skies and other areas of relatively consistent tone.
Manual exposure helps maintain consistency throughout the sequence.
Keep White Balance Consistent
Automatic white balance can also change between photographs.
A cloud passing over the sun could cause the camera to interpret the colour of the scene differently from one frame to the next.
This can produce unwanted colour changes or flickering.
Using a fixed white-balance setting can help keep the sequence consistent.
Choose an Interval
The interval determines how frequently the camera takes a photograph.
A shorter interval can be useful for fast-moving subjects such as traffic.
A longer interval may be more appropriate for slower subjects such as clouds, shadows or plant growth.
The ideal interval depends on how quickly your subject is changing and how long you want the final time-lapse to be.
How Many Photographs Do You Need?
One useful way to think about time-lapse photography is to work backwards from your desired video length.
For example, if you want a sequence that lasts 10 seconds and your final video plays at 25 frames per second, you would need:
10 × 25 = 250 photographs
This means that a relatively short time-lapse can require a surprisingly large number of images.
Planning your project beforehand can therefore save you a lot of time and storage space.
Bracketing and Time-Lapse Together
Bracketing can also be used in time-lapse photography, although it introduces additional complexity.
One example is a day-to-night time-lapse, where the lighting changes dramatically over several hours.
The exposure that works in daylight may become completely unsuitable once the sun disappears.
Exposure bracketing or more advanced exposure-ramping techniques can help deal with these changing conditions.
However, combining multiple exposures for every time-lapse frame creates a much larger number of photographs.
For example, if you normally need 250 frames for a time-lapse but capture three exposures for every frame, you could suddenly be working with:
250 × 3 = 750 photographs
That means considerably more storage, processing and editing.
It can also make the post-production process more complicated.
Focus Bracketing in Time-Lapse
Focus bracketing can also be combined with time-lapse photography, although it is less common.
It can be useful for specialised subjects such as macro time-lapse photography, where the depth of field is extremely shallow.
You could capture multiple focus points at each stage of the sequence and then combine them.
However, this dramatically increases the number of images involved.
It also introduces additional challenges because the subject may move between frames.
For most time-lapse projects, keeping the focus fixed is simpler and more reliable.
Avoiding Flicker
One of the biggest challenges when creating a time-lapse is flicker.
Flicker occurs when individual photographs have slightly different exposures or colours.
Even tiny changes that aren't obvious when looking at individual photographs can become very noticeable when the images are played rapidly.

A stable tripod
Consistent camera settings
can all help reduce the problem.
Specialist time-lapse software can also help smooth out changes during post-production.
Planning Before You Shoot
Both bracketing and time-lapse benefit from careful planning.
Before pressing the shutter, consider:
What am I trying to achieve?
Are you trying to capture a difficult exposure, create an HDR image, increase depth of field or show the passage of time?
How many photographs will I need?
This affects storage, battery life and editing time.
Will the camera remain stable?
If the images need to be combined, a tripod is often essential.
Will the light change?
Consider whether manual or automatic exposure is most appropriate for the project.
How will I process the images afterwards?
Knowing how you're going to combine or edit the photographs before you begin can influence how you capture them.
More Photographs Doesn't Automatically Mean Better Photography
Bracketing and time-lapse photography are powerful techniques, but they can also produce enormous numbers of files.
It's easy to become overwhelmed with hundreds or thousands of photographs.
The solution is to have a clear purpose.
Don't capture multiple images simply because you can.
Capture them because each image contributes something to the final result.
The best photographers aren't necessarily the ones who take the most photographs. They're the ones who understand why they're taking them.
Experiment and Learn
Bracketing teaches you to think about exposure and focus as things that can be controlled rather than simply accepted.
Focus stacking demonstrates how multiple photographs can overcome the limitations of depth of field.
Time-lapse encourages you to think about photography in terms of time, movement and change rather than a single frozen moment.
